Research: DevOps adoption rates, associated hiring and retraining, and outcomes after implementation

The DevOps approach, which brings together development and operations teams in an effort to the increase speed and efficiency of application delivery, has been gaining steam for several years. In February 2017, Tech Pro Research conducted a survey to find out how receptive companies are to this methodology, and how they’ve fared post-DevOps implementation.

Here are some key findings from the report:

  • DevOps is gaining traction. Forty-nine percent of respondents said their companies have already adopted or are planning to adopt DevOps practices, and another third said their companies are considering it.
  • The companies that have implemented DevOps have been using it for at least six months, with nearly a quarter having been DevOps shops for at least three years.
  • Most respondents whose companies have adopted or plan to adopt DevOps said they were, or are hoping to speed up deployment and reduce costs associated with deployment.
  • Fifty-five percent of respondents whose companies already implemented DevOps said new people were hired as a result of the change.
  • Almost all respondents (97%) experienced positive outcomes from implementing DevOps, including improved collaboration and productivity, fewer dependencies and coding errors, and improved morale.
