Research: Automation and the future of IT jobs

The majority (74%) of respondents to a recent Tech Pro Research said their companies are already, or are considering, automating low-level work. While this might be alarming, considering all the talk of robots replacing workers, it doesn’t appear to be the case at this point. Among respondents whose companies were automating work, 65% said they were doing so because it freed up staff to do other tasks. Only 20% said their companies were eliminating jobs as a result of automation.

However, workers do appear to be hedging their bets about automation. Ninety-three percent of respondents said they’re making some sort of effort to avoid losing their jobs in the future. The most common approaches were self-study, taking classes and working on outside projects.

This report contains more results from the survey, as well as expert analysis. Additional topics covered include types of IT work most likely to be automated, which departments of companies will have job cuts, and how respondents feel automation will affect the future of IT.
