Media disposal policy

This policy offers specific guidelines for ensuring that organization data is properly protected when you dispose of old storage media.
From the policy:
The organization’s data and information possess tremendous value and must always be safeguarded. Specific processes exist to make sure that all organization storage media are properly cleansed and sanitized prior to disposal, recycling, or donation.
This policy applies to all executives, directors, staff, part-time employees, and contractors, with particular responsibilities for the IT department director and staff.
There are no exceptions to this policy. All decommissioned equipment, even systems being donated to charity, must be cleaned of all organization data according to this policy’s guidelines.
Storage media covered by this policy
This policy applies to the following storage media:
- Desktop hard disks
- Laptop hard drives
- External and portable hard disks
- Memory sticks, thumb drives, and flash drives
- Storage area network (SAN) and network accessible storage (NAS) devices
- Server hard disks
- CDs, CD +/-R, and CD +/- RW disks
- DVDs, DVD +/- R, and DVD +/- RW disks
- Portable music players
- Tablet computers
