Developing an Active Directory Replication Strategy

If you work in a small- to medium-sized office, you probably don’t give a lot of thought to Active Directory replication. After all, the replication process happens automatically without any configuration on your part. As the size of the network increases, however, replication becomes a more pressing issue.

In this guide from TechRepublic Premium, you will learn why that is the case, and how you can plan an effective replication strategy.

    Featured text from the guide:

    OPTIMIZING THE REPLICATION PROCESS

The larger an Active Directory forest is, the more Active Directory replication traffic will be placed on the network. Since your network probably isn’t going to be getting any smaller, it makes sense to come up with a plan for dealing with replication traffic before it can become a problem.

One of the first steps in getting a handle on your Active Directory replication traffic is to understand that, by default, Windows treats all your domain controllers in basically the same way (at least for replication purposes anyway). In other words, Windows has no idea that some of your domain controllers are separated by WAN links. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy to make Windows aware of your network topology, thereby improving the efficiency of the replication process.
